Think about three people you know well (friend, family, coworker).

  • Person 1: friend
  • Person 2: family member
  • Person 3: classmate / coworker
In pairs:
Show a photo on your phone (or imagine it) and say:
“This is my friend Ana.”
Your partner asks: “Where is she from?”

Grammar · Verb be – he / she / they

We use he for men, she for women, and they for groups.

Subject Verb Example
He is → He’s He’s Carlos. He’s Mexican.
She is → She’s She’s Laura. She’s from Spain.
They are → They’re They’re my friends. They’re Brazilian.

We use this for one person or thing, and these for two or more, near us.

Word Use Example
This singular, near This is my friend Ana. She’s Mexican.
These plural, near These are my classmates. They’re Japanese.

Every word has syllables. One syllable is stronger (the stress).
