In this lesson you practise how to meet and greet new people in English, using natural tone, stress and simple everyday phrases.

Walk around the room. Say hello to at least three classmates.

  • Look at the person.
  • Smile.
  • Say: Hello or Hi.
Option: add their name if you know it.

Use these phrases when you first see someone.

Common greetings

  • Hello!
  • Hi!
  • Good morning.
  • Good afternoon.
  • Good evening.
Practice:
In pairs, say three different greetings. Change your voice: friendly, formal, relaxed.

Meeting new people · Questions

After “Hello”, ask simple questions to know the person.

  • What’s your name?
  • Where are you from?
  • Are you from around here?
  • Do you speak English?

And answer:

  • I’m Ana.
  • I’m from Mexico.
  • Yes, I’m from here. / No, I’m from Bogotá.
Mini-dialogue:
A: “Hi, I’m David. What’s your name?”
B: “Hello, I’m Sara. Nice to meet you.”

Use these expressions when you meet someone for the first time.

Nice to meet you. Nice to meet you too. It’s great to meet you. Good to meet you.

Stand up and talk with at least three people you don’t know well.

Conversation card

After three conversations, sit down and introduce one person to the class:
“This is Ahmed. He’s from Egypt. I met him today.”
